If you have always cleaned your own home, using a house cleaning service will be an interesting change. Ultimately, you will love not having to scrub the toilet or vacuum the floors yourself. However, the first time or two that you have a stranger clean your home can feel a little... odd. Rest assured, you'll be over the weirdness in no time as you get to know and trust your cleaner. But for that first appointment, follow these tips to ensure a smooth experience.

Give the cleaner some privacy.

You will probably want to be home the first time the cleaner comes so that you can answer any questions they have. But be careful not to crowd them as they do their job. Trust that they are trained and know what they are doing. Let them know where to find you if they have any questions, and then go watch TV or get some work done in the home office. If you cannot be home during the first appointment, that's okay as long as you're comfortable with it. Most cleaning services will call or text you if they need anything.

Create a list of reminders beforehand.

Does your toilet lid slam down if you don't hold it up? Maybe the carpet in the living room needs to be cleaned in a special manner to prevent damaging the fibers. Try to make a list of your home's particulars and idiosyncrasies before the cleaners arrive. Give them this list when they arrive at your home so they have time to review it. This is easier for both you and the cleaners than trying to remind them of little issues as they go.

Pick up the clutter.

Yes, you are paying the cleaning service to clean. But they will have an easier time doing so if you pick up the basic clutter beforehand. Pick up the toys off the floor, put the mail away, and so forth. As your cleaner gets to know your home better, you may be able to add some of these tasks to their list, but for this first appointment, you want the space relatively clear so they can focus on the actual cleaning, like vacuuming and dusting.

Thank and tip your cleaner.

If you treat your cleaner well, they will continue to offer you good service. Thank them before they leave, and remember that it is customary to tip a cleaning service.
